Educational Paths Towards Sustainability
Torino (Italy), 2-6 October 2005
The Third World Environmental Education Congress, which took place in Turin, concluded the phase of consolidation and opened the series of biennial Congresses. The first objective of the Congress was to exchange observations and best practices at a worldwide level, to develop the main themes for the agenda on environmental education and to jointly discuss the themes and proposals presented in the speeches and posters from around the world. The third edition of the WEEC had the objective of creating a world community on environmental and sustainable education research and practice. This gave it a significant place in the first year of the United Nation Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).
The Congress addressed a great number of university professors and researchers, educators, politicians, scientists, technicians and professionals, teachers, students, environmentalists, mass media...
Organizing Committee: Piemonte Region, Province of Torino, Municipality of Torino, ARPA Piemonte and Istituto per l’Ambiente e l’Educazione Scholé Futuro Onlus.
Scientific Committee: professors and researchers of international uiversities.
Sponsorship of international organizations and United Nations agencies: UNEP, UNESCO, FAO e OMS.

The primary aims of the Congress were:
-
To highlight and examine how education, training, information and environmental research help develop an equitable, democratic society that is an actively involved friend of the environment; respectful of life on the planet and in harmony with nations, human beings and other living species.

To establish a more direct, continuous exchange of best practices among all the nations of the world, where environmental education is experiencing significant growth and is tackling themes of great interest such as participative democracy, good citizenship, the equitable and sustainable management of natural resources, ecotourism, etc…

To give international visibility to the research and achievements of environmental education in the respective countries

To contribute to the DESD- the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development

To identify the fields of practice and research to review at the next congress in 2007.
Conclusions: Turin Congress closes a first phase of "construction", with the consolidation of the network WEEC. The WEEC International Secretariat hosted by Istituto per l'Ambiente e l'Educazione Scholé Futuro ONLUS (Institute for Environment and Education Scholé Futuro ONLUS) in Turin, Italy.
