Montreal (Canada), 10-14 May 2009

The 5th World Environmental Education Congress gave nearly 2,200 stakeholders from 106 different countries the opportunity to join forces in exploring new ways by which we can better live together in our schools and institutions, our neighbourhoods and businesses, our cities, towns and regions, in short, on Earth, our common home. This confirms the growing interest about environmental education and sustainability, a complex and constantly changing field.

General objectives

  • To promote the role environmental education plays in developing and enriching human identity and constructing  healtier individuals, communities, and societies.
  • To highlight the contribution environmental education brings to social innovation by addressing socio-ecological issues and contributing to eco-development within all societies.
  • To emphasize the role environmental education can play in public policy development, and how public policy can strengthen environmental education.

Organizing committee: UQAM - Université du Québec à Montréal, Lakehead University, Ontario, Association québécoise pour la promotion de l’éducation relative à l’environnement (AQPERE), Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM).

The Earth, our common home,  the “Oïkos”, or shared household, in which all life exists and on which all human and more-than-human activity rests. This “household” is the basis for all relationships and foundation for ideas about identity, solidarity, and socio-ecological relations with all forms of life. It is also the context that gives rise to ecology, ecosophy, and economy and relationships amongst them.

The Congress topics

  • Relationships between ecology and economy: the issue of sustainability
  • Questions of fairness in socio-ecological issues
  • Environmental health
  • Urban challenges
  • Ecologizing colleges and universities
  • School and community
  • Learning in society
  • Heritage interpretation
  • Indigenous knowledge and practices
  • Ethics, environmental thought and worldviews
  • Art: imagination, creativity and meaning
  • Ecological identity
