MENA dedicated sets of events will be officially included in the programme of the Stockholm World Water Week - form 28 August to 2 September 2016.

GWP (Global Water Partnership) - Med has been selected as the overall coordinator for this “MENA Focus”, working closely with partners active in the region.

The main aim of the “MENA Focus” is to enhance experience and knowledge sharing, as well as to promote regional priority issues in the global water agenda.

In line with the World Water Week’s ‘Water for sustainable growth’ theme, the event will address key issues that impede sustainable growth in the region, while also contributing to the global water agenda by showcasing replicable practices and lessons learnt.

The “MENA Focus” will take place on 30 and 31 August and consist of 4 separate sessions:

1.       “Seeking answers to the water crisis in the MENA

2.       “Strengthening Water Governance through Sustainable Financing & Integrity

3.       “Informing the SDGs through the Arab MDG+ Initiative

4.       “World Café 2016: Water, Growth, Stability

IECA: call for submissions for the 2017 Conference on Communication and Environment

The 2017 IECA Conference on Communication and Environment (COCE) - Democracy, Borders and Public/Political Engagement:Challenges for Environmental Communication - will take place at the University of Leicester (UK) on June 29 - July 2, 2017.

The theme will explore the challenges faced by environmental communication as political landscapes (for example the 2016 UK referendum debate) and boundaries experience major upheavals and change, seemingly driven by widespread discontent with conventional politics and its institutions.

The conference is open to practitioners, artists and academics. Proposals for papers, panels, and posters on all aspects of environmental communication and practice are all welcomed.

Nature based Solutions at the Mediterranean Climate Change Conference

The MedCOP Climate 2016, 18- 19 July 2016, is organized by the Region of Tanger-Tétouan-AlHoceima. It gathered representatives from Mediterranean countries, including the private sector, civil society, and regional and international organizations.

The conference is a milestone for the Mediterranean countries to discuss the Paris Agreement adopted in December 2015, while preparing for the upcoming COP22 in Morocco and an operational road map for mitigation and adaptation.

This COP22 is now the climate COP of Action, with the significant challenge of bringing together stakeholders into a dialogue for action and involvement from governments and civil society.

UN Summer Academy 2016: ‘Shaping a Sustainable Future’ on 22-26 August 2016 – register now!

After the inauguration of the United Nations System Staff College – Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development in Bonn in March 2016, the Knowledge Centre is now inviting to its UN Summer Academy 2016, taking place for the first time in Bonn from 22 to 26 August. Following the objective of the UN Organizations in Bonn in ‘Shaping a Sustainable Future’ this edition will focus on the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals, along with the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The UN Summer Academy has been organized by the UN System Staff College (UNSSC) every year since 2012. It prides itself on offering executive education, learning and knowledge exchange to those actively engaged with the UN System in their daily lives.

This edition will: engage participants in a dialogue and exchange of practices requiring profound changes beyond ‘business as usual’; leverage the presence of numerous UN entities in Bonn, as well as leading institutions in international development; present ongoing efforts to develop sustainability strategies in Germany and showcase practical examples on sharing knowledge to advance global development.

The Summer Academy is open to UN staff, civil society and private sector representatives alike, as well as a select number of post-graduate students and young professionals, interested in further pursuing opportunities in the field of sustainable development.

Former Norwegian Minister Erik Solheim was designed at UN Environment Programme

Mr. Erik Solheim, former Minister of Environment and International Development of Norway, was appointed yesterday 27 June 2016 as Executive Director of UNEP, with the concurrent position of UN Under-Secretary-General.

Mr. Solheim arrives at UNEP after having served as Chair of the DAC of the OECD since 2013. He has also served as UNEP Special Envoy for Environment, Conflict and Disaster. Known as the "green" politician, he held the combined portfolio of Norway's Minister of the Environment and International Development from 2007 to 2012, and served as Minister of International Development from 2005 to 2007.

Curriculum Framework: Education for Sustainable Development

In Germany the Curriculum Framework for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was unanimously accepted. It is the result of the joint initiative of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the 16 German federal states and civil society.

It is a contribution to the new Global Action Programme following the UN ESD-decade and to the United Nation’s 2030-agenda. Its focus is on ensuring that quality of school education becomes the foundation for sustainable development. It contains topics, competencies and concrete examples for primary education, all subjects of secondary education and vocational training. Additional there are one chapter on whole approach to ESD and on teacher education and ESD.

The German version was published in February and will go to all schools and the school administration.


The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) adopted 25 resolution

 "Investing in human capacity for sustainable development, through environmental education and training". This Is the title of one of the 25 resolution that UNEA has recently adopted.

The main objective of the resolution is to promote greater awareness and capacity amongst policy makers, future leaders and the public in addressing priority environment and sustainability issues.

The resolution requests the Executive Director: to continue to provide technical assistance through access to environmental education, training and capacity building opportunities, to promote interaction between UNEP and the higher education community; to encourage Member States and other relevant stakeholders to support the work of the UNEP to enhance environmental education and training.
